Sustainability Design

Software’s critical role in society demands a paradigm shift in the software engineering mind-set. This shift is driven by requirements engineering.

Requirements: The Key to Sustainability, IEEE Software 2016

For the sake of future generations, the software systems we design in the next 50 years must advance social, economic, and environmental causes simultaneously with technical ones. An initiative I co-founded in 2014 has produced the Karlskrona Manifesto for Sustainability Design (please have a look and consider adding your name to the signatories) and grown into an active international research network (new members welcome). Together, we are developing new ways to think about the multiple dimensions of sustainability in the design of software and information systems.
